Alternative routes are being built after a landslide severed a bridge and halted traffic to high Himalayan valleys.

Bridge damaged, traffic stopped

A landslide early Wednesday morning damaged the Kulagad suspension bridge on the Dharchula-Gunji route in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district, according to the Hindustan Times.

Traffic movement from Dharchula toward the Vyas and Darma valleys was suspended as a result. The bridge is located roughly eight to eleven kilometres from Dharchula.

Officials have requested that people avoid travel to and from Dharchula and the high valley villages until an alternative route is ready.

Temporary route under construction

The Border Roads Organisation has begun constructing a temporary route alongside the damaged bridge, using cement blocks.

The administration expects pedestrian movement to resume by Wednesday evening, and small vehicles may be allowed on the alternative route from Thursday, depending on construction progress, Hindustan Times reported Sub-divisional Magistrate Ashish Joshi as saying.

Reconstruction of the main bridge is expected to take between five and ten days.

Pilgrims' return schedule affected

The disruption has affected the return schedule for pilgrims on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, the Hindustan Times reported.

Two batches of pilgrims are scheduled to return from Gunji to Dharchula in the coming days.

An official said that if an alternate route could be developed, one batch could return on Wednesday, with the final batch returning on August 23.
