A high-speed train crossed the world's highest rail bridge after a speed limit increase on a challenging Himalayan route.

Train crosses bridge at higher speed

A Vande Bharat Express train reached nearly 100 kilometers per hour while crossing the Chenab Railway Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district. The Chenab bridge is the world's highest railway bridge. Officials said the increase was possible because the maximum permitted speed on the 111-kilometer Katra-Banihal broad-gauge rail section had been raised to 100 kmph.

The speed was successfully tested on Thursday, according to the Hindu, while Hindustan Times reported the development came after a recent increase in the permissible limit. Senior divisional commercial manager Uchit Singhal said the Vande Bharat Express set a new record by crossing both the Chenab Bridge and India's first cable-stayed Anji Khad Railway Bridge at 100 kmph.

Why the speed limit increased

Railway officials said the national ministry approved the higher speed after the railways met all required safety conditions. Previously, trains were allowed to run at a maximum of 85 kmph on part of the route and 75 kmph on another section.

Uchit Singhal stated the change would reduce travel time and strengthen connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir. He said it would provide faster, safer, and more comfortable travel, which could boost tourism, trade, and economic activity in the region.

A difficult engineering project

The Katra-Banihal rail section is a technically difficult part of the larger Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link project, which aims to connect the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India by rail. The route passes through tough terrain in the Pir Panjal and lower Himalayan ranges, featuring deep valleys, steep slopes, major rivers, and complex geology.

The section includes 33 tunnels and major engineering structures like the Chenab Bridge over the Chenab River and the Anji Khad cable-stayed bridge. The construction required extensive use of advanced engineering techniques.
