The engine’s read
The IAF chief warns that slower fighter jet production directly threatens India's combat readiness.
Annual shortfall threatens squadron strength
The Indigenous Air Force (IAF) needs to produce and induct between 36 and 40 new fighter jets each year to prevent its combat squadron count from dropping below 30, according to Air Chief Marshal AP Singh.
He stated the current delays in induction "are going to hurt us" and that the service ultimately needs more than that annual rate to build toward a target of 42 squadrons.
Three programs to fill the gap
The IAF is counting on three aircraft programs to meet the required numbers. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) plans to build 20 LCA Mk-1A jets per year.
A proposed contract for 114 Rafale fighter jets, known as the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) deal, would supply about 12 aircraft annually. An existing contract for 12 Sukhoi Su-30MKIs would add more planes over two years.
If all proceed, Singh said the combined output could reach 35 to 40 jets a year.
Timelines and a separate commendation
The IAF chief said the MRFA contract could be finalized by the end of the financial year. Under the considered model, France would supply 20 Rafales in fly-away condition, with the rest made in India by Dassault Aviation and a local partner.
Separately, during his annual media briefing ahead of IAF Day, Singh commended Captain Smit Machchhar for his bravery during a recent mid-air terror attack on a commercial flight, calling his physical and mental resolve "a lesson for us."

Each channel’s width is that outcome’s probability as it was sealed into the ledger, before this page existed. Widths are not rescaled to fill the frame, so branches that do not sum to 100% visibly do not. Where a cost is shown it is the dominant measured drag on that branch, not a price.
50%Resolves YES if, by 2026-10-18 (UTC), at least two independent sources of the kind already tracked on this narrative report that procurement delays continue unabated — specifically: Despite IAF leadership warnings, bureaucratic hurdles, budget constraints, and competing domestic priorities prevent the required 40 aircraft/year production target from being met, leaving IAF squadron strength gradually declining.. The bottom lineprovisional while the story is live
The state of this story is one of acknowledged peril with no clear trigger for change. The chief's warning creates a measurable benchmark, but the domestic political landscape and high costs are powerful counterweights. The most likely path, scored at 50 percent, is continued stagnation and gradual decline.
Watch for reports confirming whether the 40-aircraft-per-year target is being met. Also monitor the geopolitical situation for any incident that could act as an external shock, the 25-percent-probability path. The story remains in a provisional state, waiting for a force strong enough to break the current equilibrium.
‘Delay in inducting new fighter jets hurting IAF’: Air Chief Marshal AP Singh highlights need for strengthening IAF
He praised Captain Machchhar's bravery and stressed the importance of timely delivery of fighter jets to maintain operational readiness against growing threats.
