Voters in three key constituencies will learn who won Monday, with results influencing state politics ahead of future elections.

Three seats await results

Results from three assembly by-elections, held on July 30, will be declared on Monday.

The constituencies are Bankipur in Bihar, Datia in Madhya Pradesh, and Manjalpur in Gujarat.

Two of these—Bankipur and Datia—are considered traditional strongholds of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Bihar's contest features PK

The Bankipur seat became vacant after BJP leader Nitin Nabin resigned following his election to the Rajya Sabha.

The BJP has fielded Neeraj Kumar Sinha, but the contest has been complicated by the entry of political strategist Prashant Kishor, founder of the Jan Suraaj Party.

Kishor has campaigned relentlessly, turning what could have been a straightforward BJP win into a more competitive race.

Datia's prestige battle

The Datia bypoll was triggered after Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti was sentenced to prison, ending his assembly membership.

The BJP denied a ticket to former minister Narottam Mishra, who had lost the seat in 2023, leading to protests and clashes.

Mishra later pledged support for the BJP candidate, Ashutosh Tiwari, who faces Congress nominee Ghanshyam Singh. Analysts say the result could shape the standing of both parties ahead of the 2028 state elections.

A legal challenge to the practice

Separately, the Madras High Court commented on the practice of MLAs resigning only to recontest for another party, calling it a "mockery of democracy."

The remarks came during a public interest litigation hearing concerning six AIADMK MLAs in Tamil Nadu who resigned and joined the ruling TVK, with two now running as TVK candidates in the by-elections they created.

The court asked why the Election Commission should not create guidelines to prevent this.
