The actor was best known for his role as a mobster turned informant on the iconic HBO series.

Found at home in the Bronx

Vincent Pastore died on Saturday at the age of 80. He was found at his residence on New York's City Island in the Bronx, according to his longtime manager Bob McGowan, who learned of the death from another actor from 'The Sopranos'.

The BBC's partner CBS News reported there was no indication of criminality in relation to his death. McGowan had been trying to reach Pastore about a possible job after not hearing from him for a few days.

Remembered as 'Big Pussy'

Pastore was best known for playing Salvatore 'Big Pussy' Bonpensiero, the best friend of mob boss Tony Soprano who becomes an FBI informant, on the HBO series 'The Sopranos'. His character's death in the show's second season is one of its most memorable storylines.

The actor appeared in all six seasons of the show through flashbacks and dreams, despite his character being killed off. He and the cast won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2000.

A kind-hearted veteran actor

Tributes from colleagues described Pastore as kind and generous, contrasting his tough-guy on-screen persona. His manager, Robert Attermann, said Pastore 'treated everyone with warmth and respect' and never turned down a fan seeking an autograph or photo.

Actor Michael Imperioli, a longtime friend, said on Instagram that Pastore was 'a kind-hearted brother who cared deeply about his family and friends.' Pastore served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War before beginning an acting career that included roles in films like 'Goodfellas' and 'Carlito's Way'.
