A Roche executive argues that rising rates of chronic disease hurt productivity and must be met with healthcare innovation.
The scale of the problem
Roche executive Jörg Rupp stated that about 3 billion people globally live with a chronic, or non-communicable, disease. He said the burden is expected to keep rising.
These diseases, which include heart conditions, cancer, and neurological disorders, cause roughly 43 million deaths a year. That represents nearly three-quarters of all deaths worldwide, according to Rupp.
He argued that current health systems are designed for treating sudden illnesses and are mismatched for providing the ongoing care that chronic diseases require.
Economic and access gaps
The economic impact is severe, Rupp said. He cited estimates that poor health can lead to productivity losses worth up to 15% of a country's annual economic output.
Access to care is a major issue. Rupp stated that roughly half the world's population lacks access to essential health services, and two-thirds of diseases are either poorly treated or not treated at all.
An aging population adds pressure. The number of people over 65 is projected to triple by 2050, further straining healthcare systems.
A case for innovation and mindset shift
Rupp called for a shift in mindset toward healthcare and a greater focus on prevention. He said healthier populations are needed to drive the economic growth that will fund future healthcare.
He pointed to pharmaceutical development as a source of hope. More than 12,900 medicines are in development globally, he noted, with 75% targeting non-communicable diseases.
"We have a once-in-a-generation chance to capture the full value of innovation at scale," Rupp said. He argued that investing in health can protect the workforce and broader economic stability.

Each channel’s width is that outcome’s probability as it was sealed into the ledger, before this page existed. Widths are not rescaled to fill the frame, so branches that do not sum to 100% visibly do not. Where a cost is shown it is the dominant measured drag on that branch, not a price.

The bottom lineprovisional while the story is live
Roche has pushed on a strategic pivot point, reframing a health crisis as an economic one to reignite a stalled conversation. The most likely path forward involves building a coalition for coordinated action, but the outcome is fragile and will be decided by reactions from industry peers and policymakers in the coming months.
The story is still moving. The core question is whether this new framing garners enough collective momentum or is blocked by institutional friction and competing priorities. The range of outcomes—from collective action to economic narrowness to policy silence—will become clearer as the system absorbs and responds to this strategic signal.
