The payments firm plans to expand its Indian business beyond processing to lending and international transfers.

Planned expansion into new services

NTT Data Payment Services India, a subsidiary of Japanese infrastructure firm NTT Data, is planning to add merchant financing and cross-border payments to its business, according to a report by Mint. The company has so far focused on back-end payments infrastructure, working with clients like the National Payments Corporation of India.

"We need to have a loan licence and a non-bank licence for each country. In India, we don't have those, so we're looking for a good partner," Shinichiro Nishikawa, head of global payments strategy at NTT Data Japan, told Mint. The company also aims to offer value-added services it already provides elsewhere, such as in-store and online payments.

Challenges and the UPI factor

The company said India currently provides only a small share of its global revenue because payment services are hard to monetize there. Nishikawa explained that a zero merchant discount rate on UPI, or Unified Payments Interface, transactions means the company cannot collect fees from those payments as it can in other countries.

To grow, NTT Data launched a new platform in India called Adaptis for merchant payments, which is already used in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The platform is built on UPI's systems and is designed to link UPI with other fast payment networks for cross-border transactions.

Why this is happeningwritten from what the engine measured

The engine measures Exploration Drive here as a critical-high force, with a magnitude of +0.7692. That means the merchant financing and cross-border payments spaces NTT is targeting are both relatively new and unexamined areas in India; this is not a simple copy of an existing business model.

A second critical-high force is Interaction Field, also +0.7692. This indicates NTT's success depends entirely on coupling with local partners—including merchant acquirers, banks, and payment networks—rather than on deploying its own technology in isolation.

Other strong forces include Directed Intelligence, Adaptive Decay, and Feedback & Momentum. This cluster shows the company has strategic clarity but also carries the drag of legacy systems and costs. Each move toward a new partner could create a compounding loop of more merchant flow and more data.

The Ethical Gradient force is also active at a high magnitude. Merchant financing, especially for small merchants, carries a real risk of over-indebtedness, which could lead to regulatory scrutiny or reputational damage if not carefully managed.

The bottom lineprovisional while the story is live

NTT Data Payments' entry into India's merchant finance and cross-border payments is an exploratory move that hinges on finding and integrating with the right local partners. Its strategic intent is clear, but its path is defined by that coupling challenge, complicated by the need to manage legacy costs and ethical risks.

The forecast is provisional, as the engine could not generate specific outcome probabilities. What happens next will be decided in the near term: if NTT does not secure key partnership corridors or distribution deals within 30 to 60 days, the proposition falters. Watch for announcements of defined partnerships as the first real signal of progress.
