A family’s blocked return

More than 100 Israeli settlers attacked the village of Jalud in the occupied West Bank overnight Monday into Tuesday. The raid prevented a Palestinian family, the al-Tubasis, from returning to their homes with an Israeli military escort, as ordered by Israel's High Court earlier in the month, Al Jazeera, BBC News and France 24 reported.

The family had been displaced two months earlier after weeks of settler harassment. When they arrived with the army, settlers threw stones and set fire to Palestinian properties, including two of the family’s houses, which were found already vandalized. The BBC reported the family described the scene as terrifying, with the grandfather saying he expected to be killed.

Israeli soldiers used tear gas and pepper spray against the settlers, according to the BBC. France 24 reported that three Israeli Border Police officers were lightly injured and a security forces vehicle was damaged during the clashes. One person was arrested and two minors were taken for questioning.

Medics targeted in separate attacks

In separate incidents on Friday, Israeli forces and settlers injured six Palestinians in the West Bank governorates of Nablus and Bethlehem, Al Jazeera reported. Two of the injured were paramedics from the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

An ambulance crew responding to injured people in the Khalayel al-Louz area near Bethlehem was pelted with stones, injuring the two medics and damaging the vehicle, according to the PRCS. In the same area, settlers attacking vehicles wounded three other Palestinians. Further north in Beit Furik, a man was beaten by Israeli forces and subsequently arrested, the PRCS said.

Rare official condemnation

The Jalud attack drew rare condemnation from senior Israeli officials, France 24 reported. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed a 'small group of rioters,' saying their actions harm the community and interfere with security forces. President Isaac Herzog called the attack a 'moral stain.'.

Human rights groups and the United Nations have documented a sharp increase in settler violence. The UN Human Rights Office has stated settlers, alongside Israeli forces, 'frequently attack families, burn mosques and destroy and confiscate property.' Al Jazeera cited Palestinian figures showing more than 1,180 Palestinians killed in the West Bank since October 2023.
