A sightseeing flight carrying tourists over a national park crashed, killing all four people on board.

Helicopter crashes near popular lookout

A helicopter crashed on Saturday afternoon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, killing its pilot and three passengers. The aircraft went down near the Vista Chinesa lookout point within the Tijuca National Park, a mountainous, forested area famous for views of the Christ the Redeemer statue.

All four people on board died, according to a statement from the Colombian consul in Brazil. The three passengers were Colombian women from the same family.

Fatal sightseeing flight for a birthday

The flight was a tourist sightseeing tour. The Colombian consul general in Rio de Janeiro said the three women were part of a family group of six visiting the city to celebrate a girl's 15th birthday.

Helicopter tours are a popular way for visitors to see Rio's landmarks from the air. Because the aircraft could only carry three passengers, the family had split into two groups for the flights.

The victims were identified as the birthday girl's grandmother, aunt, and cousin.

Calls for increased oversight of tours

Following the crash, Rio de Janeiro's mayor called for stricter regulation of tourist helicopter flights. Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere urged Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency, known as ANAC, to intensify its oversight.

"We place the entire apparatus of City Hall at the disposal of ANAC to support the measures and actions that may be necessary," Cavaliere said in a social media post. He even suggested flights could be temporarily suspended while new safety measures were put in place.

The crash follows a recent fatal midair collision between two helicopters in a western suburb of Rio on June 14, which killed six people.
