An AI-generated video fabricated a BBC report blaming Indian nationals for a hijacking attempt that the real pilot helped thwart.
The deepfake report
A fabricated video, designed to appear as a BBC news report, falsely claimed an Indian passenger named Raghav Menon attempted to hijack a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The video, which France 24 described as an AI-generated deepfake with a 99 percent probability, alleges Menon was a former Indian intelligence agent working with the plane's pilot.
The video uses digitally manipulated footage of BBC presenter Sally Bundock. France 24 reported that graphics and fonts in the fake video do not match the BBC's style, the presenter's mouth appears blurred, and an AI watermark is visible. The BBC never broadcast the report.
The real pilot's actions
The actual incident involved the plane's pilot, Indian national Smit Machchhar, who was stabbed by his co-pilot. In a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Captain Machchhar said that while injured on the floor, he opened the cockpit door so passengers could enter and help stabilize the rapidly descending plane.
Machchhar, whom both Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have called a hero, was taken to a hospital in Saudi Arabia and later airlifted to Abu Dhabi, where he is reported to be in stable condition and recovering well.
No evidence supports fake claim
France 24 stated that no verified sources support the deepfake's claim about Raghav Menon. The only confirmed Indian link is pilot Smit Machchhar, who is being praised as a hero, not implicated as an accomplice.
The fake video was shared by an account known for spreading anti-Indian disinformation. Separately, the BBC reported that passengers and crew overpowered the attacker, allowing the plane to land safely in Saudi Arabia.

Why this is happeningwritten from what the engine measured
The story is moving because new information and intent are pushing it forward. This involves the release of a fabricated BBC report and the existence of a real narrative about a pilot's heroism, creating a contest between them.
The measured forces show a strong 'adaptive decay', meaning the fake report is mismatched with established facts and is inherently unstable. This is why its collapse is the most likely outcome.
However, high 'feedback and momentum' and a strong 'interaction field' mean the fabricated story's fate is tied to social dynamics. If it resonates with existing prejudices or communities primed for distrust, it can achieve self-reinforcing momentum, complicating efforts to debunk it.
The measured capacity and imperative for truth-seeking institutions to act, termed 'directed intelligence' and the 'ethical gradient', are creating counter-momentum for verification and debunking.

Each channel’s width is that outcome’s probability as it was sealed into the ledger, before this page existed. Widths are not rescaled to fill the frame, so branches that do not sum to 100% visibly do not. Where a cost is shown it is the dominant measured drag on that branch, not a price.
55%Resolves YES if, by 2026-10-06 (UTC), at least two independent sources of the kind already tracked on this narrative report that narrative collapse under official scrutiny — specifically: The fake BBC report is swiftly and widely debunked by official channels (BBC, Indian government, UAE/Flydubai), losing credibility. The focus remains on the true story of the pilot's heroism.. Resolves NO if the horizon passes without such reporting. Resolves VOID if the underlying question stops being answerable (for example the event is cancelled or superseded).#d0ba06283774

10%Resolves YES if, by 2026-10-03 (UTC), at least two independent sources of the kind already tracked on this narrative report that precursor to a broader influence operation — specifically: The fake BBC report is not an isolated piece of disinformation but a test or opening salvo in a coordinated campaign, potentially state-linked, aiming to destabilize India-UAE-Israel relations or discredit the BBC ahead of a larger event.. The bottom lineprovisional while the story is live
The most likely path is the collapse of the fabricated narrative, but this is not a certainty. A 35% chance of persistent confusion represents a substantial risk, directly tied to how the story interacts with social identity and pre-existing distrust.
Watch for two things: the speed at which the story spreads or is contained, and any signs linking it to broader AI-enabled information operations. These variables will determine which of the three projected outcomes plays out.
