A UN official alleges he was fired for organizing Gaza protests and publishing a critical report.

Official says contract was not renewed

Ben Davis, the former Director of Rural Transformation and Gender Equality at the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, said his contract was not renewed in July. He told AFP the reason given was that he breached rules on impartiality.

Davis said the FAO accused him of organizing weekly silent protests at the organization's Rome headquarters about starvation and famine in Gaza. He was also criticized for a May report he worked on concerning food availability in Gaza and humanitarian law, which he said he was told to take down.

FAO head warned staff about activism

FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu appeared to comment on the matter in a public, filmed session on Tuesday. He told staff the organization does not allow them to 'play the game here of human rights,' adding that a separate agency in Geneva handles those matters.

'If you want to take care, go there. That’s why some senior members play the political game here, I fire him,' Qu said. The director-general added, 'I will fire more people if they are against the law.' Davis said he believed the comments were about him, noting he had been scolded publicly before for being 'too political.'.

Protests continued after his departure

Davis said hundreds of people attended the weekly silent protests at their peak. He said that now, after his departure, the gatherings continue but with only 30 to 40 participants each week.

The bottom lineprovisional while the story is live

The diplomatic severance represents a dangerous but high-probability escalation of a long-running regional conflict. While outright war is a low-probability risk, the most likely path points to a managed but hostile stalemate loaded with friction.

The key variable to watch is whether external forces can intervene effectively or if mutual costs will compel a reversal. For now, the story is still moving, and the high certainty lies in the event's impact, not its final outcome.
